Arroyo Seco - Ski Village North of Taos

I reserved one night for us to stay in a tipi in a hostel just north of Taos New Mexico in a tiny ski village called Arroyo Seco. Thought that would be fun.  And it was fun but the experience was a bit like being yanked back in time to the 1970s. Communal kitchen with not too clean cookware and totally dull knives, toilet paper missing from the bathroom, doors locked until 4 pm to keep out the undesirables, a guy sleeping in his car in the parking lot who was pretty down and out, several folks so wasted that they couldn't find the bathroom by themselves, etc, etc. But I could understand because for me life was like that in the 1970s. It was just the way it was 24/7. The tipi was interesting - it had a real bed in it - and the guy running the place was very friendly and fun to talk with.
I know, I know - it looks like I "enhanced" this photo beyond reality. But actually this is the real photo of a truck owned by a guy who runs of the handful of shops along the main street.

Another shop - most were selling all manner of things and none too cheap.
Two more shops on the main drag - this is a one-street town.
Well, it IS New Mexico, so there are lots of dried peppers hanging on or near doorways. Gorgeous colors!

This shop had huge looms set up in the back and sold woven carpets and smaller woven items and wool and other things needed for weaving. Very beautiful things. Pricey, because the labor that goes into making the weavings is usually immense.

Now we are in Taos and yesterday we spent a lot of time at Taos Pueblo, which is an amaaaaazing place. Look out for the next post!
